How Does Med Spa Pricing Work? Units, Areas & Series

The short answer
Med spa menus price by the shape of the treatment: injectables by the unit, because the amount used varies from person to person; light treatments by the session or the area; and treatments that build over visits as a series. “Priced at consultation” means the plan comes first and the number follows it.
Med spa pricing has a reputation for being hard to pin down, and the reputation is earned: plenty of menus hide the numbers behind a consultation request, and the ones that do publish prices use four different shapes to do it. A price per unit here, a price per area there, a series bundle, and sometimes no number at all.
None of those shapes is a trick. Each one exists because of how a particular treatment is actually delivered, and once you can read them, any menu — ours included — gets much easier to compare honestly. We publish our full price list, so we will use our own menu as the worked example throughout.
The four shapes of a med spa menu
Almost every price you will see on a med spa menu is one of four shapes. Here they are side by side, each with a real example from our published list.

What does per-unit pricing mean?
Injectables like wrinkle relaxers are measured in units, and the number of units a treatment uses varies from person to person and area to area. Per-unit pricing follows the product: you pay for what is actually used, rather than a flat fee that would overcharge one person and shortchange the next.
The honest corollary is that a per-unit price on its own tells you very little. Thirteen dollars a unit only becomes a real number once you know roughly how many units your plan calls for — and that is a question for the person examining your face, not for an article. Ask for the estimated total at your consultation, in writing if you like, before anything is booked.
What does per-area pricing mean?
Some treatments are applied to a region rather than measured out in units, and those are priced by the area — underarms, for example, or the lower legs. Our BBL® hair reduction is priced this way, from $150 per area.
The question worth asking with any per-area price is simply how the practice defines an area. Practices draw those lines differently, and a cheaper per-area price over smaller areas is not cheaper. A straight answer to that question is a good sign in itself.
Why are some treatments sold as a series?
Some treatments are booked as a set of visits rather than a single appointment, and menus reflect that with a series price. On our list, microneedling is $225 a session, and a series of three is published from $600 — less than three single sessions booked one at a time.
A series price is a commitment in both directions: you commit to the arc of visits, and the practice commits to a lower total for it. The one caution we would give anywhere, including here, is not to buy a series before a consultation has confirmed the plan actually calls for one.
Why do some menus say “priced at consultation”?
A few treatments are planned so individually that an honest menu declines to print a number for them. HALO® resurfacing is our example: the treatment is tailored to your skin at a consultation, and the price follows the plan rather than preceding it.
It is fair to be wary of hidden pricing — much of this article exists because of it — but the test is simple. “Priced at consultation” is honest when the consultation is free, the plan comes with a written number, and nothing obliges you to book. A firm quote offered before anyone has looked at your skin is the thing that deserves more suspicion, not less.
What does “starting at” actually include?
“Starting at” marks the entry version of a treatment: the base area, the single session, the smallest plan. It is not a bait number when the menu also tells you what moves it — add-ons, additional areas, or a longer series. On our microneedling listing, for example, the neck and décolletage are published add-ons at $50 each, so you can see the shape of a larger plan before you ever ask.
Wherever you go, the questions are the same three: what does the starting price include, what would my plan add to it, and what is my estimated total. A practice that answers all three plainly — before you book — is telling you something about how the rest of the relationship will go.
